The Rio Tinto pyrite mines are located in the province of Huelva, about 80 km northwest of Seville. The giant opencast mines of Rio Tinto create a surreal, almost lunar landscape. The removal of soil and rock, in the search for several metals like gold, copper, silver, zinc, lead and others, has tinted this part of the world in reddish hues and a large range of other colors. The mining operations (since Prehistoric time), have created some pits several kilometers across.
