A field trip to sepiolite deposits will be organized. Departure will be from Madrid on Monday 7th June. The meeting point for the participant of the visit will be the Chamartín Hotel, located just at the Madrid-Chamartín railway station, at 8:00 a.m. (see map at the hotel web). The hotel can be easily reached via the Renfe Cercanias routes described for the Workshop above.
The Madrid Basin is a well-known geological occurrence of Mg-rich clays. In addition, it hosts the world’s largest sepiolite deposit. The Madrid Basin is an intra-plate basin, which originated during the late activation of Hercynian faults from the end of the Cretaceous to the Pliocene. Sepiolite is associated with other magnesium clays (saponite, stevensite, and palygorskite), calcretes, and silcretes, within a lacustrine sedimentary environment. A short but significant visit to mining works at some few kilometres southward from Madrid will take place.
The field trip will include a lunch at 13:30. After the lunch the bus will arrive at:
Other arrangements may be made, but everyone should check out of the hotel and bring their luggage with them at 08:00. Travel to Seville is not included in the cost of the field trip.

The Symposium Conferences will be held at Sevilla on Tuesday 8th June, in the afternoon. The Symposium will be introduced by E. Galán, followed by several short invited contributions on sepiolite that will cover the topics of geology and genesis, the role of biomineralization on its formation, the crystallochemical variability and the evolution from the industrial uses to the application in the design of advanced materials.
The symposium will take place in a special parallel session on the first afternoon of the General Meeting in Seville. Directions to the convention hotel are provided below.
Registration is necessary to attend the Symposium.
