1. Field Trip to Mg-Clay Deposits (Madrid Basin)
The Madrid Basin is well-known by the occurrence of huge concentrations of Mg-rich clays. It hosts the world’s largest sepiolite deposit. The Madrid Basin is an intra-plate basin, which originated during the late activation of Hercynian faults from the end of the Cretaceous to the Pliocene. Sepiolite is associated with other magnesium clays (saponite, stevensite, and palygorskite), calcretes, and silcretes, within a lacustrine sedimentary environment. A short but significant visit to mining works at some few kilometres southward from Madrid will take place. The visit will include geological observations at the sepiolite quarries in Vicalvaro (Madrid) and Cabañas (Toledo).

FIELD TRIP SCHEDULE
Departure: Monday 7th June, 8:00 a.m.
Departure point: Chamartin Hotel
The field trip will include a lunch at 13:30. After the lunch the bus will arrive at:
- 16:30 hours (bus station)
- 16:40 hours (high-speed train, AVE)
- 17:30 hours (airport)
Other arrangements may be made, but everyone should check out of the hotel and bring their luggage with them at 08:00. Travel to Seville is not included in the cost of the field trip.
